New Zealand’s share of honey production is only 1.2%. It is 19th on the list of the world’s honey producers.

New Zealand exported 11,795 tonnes of honey in 2022. This is almost half of its own honey production. Despite this, New Zealand ranks 17th or 1.5% in terms of exports. This is fundamentally different if we take exports in money.

In US dollars, New Zealand’s exports totalled $266 731 thousand. And it is the second place with a share of 10%. In the first place is China. Such a significant volume of exports by New Zealand is explained by the fact that it exports one of the most expensive honeys in the world – Manuka. The value of which is $22.61 per kg.

The average value of exported honey from New Zealand is $22.61 per kg. In comparison, the average value of honey exported globally is $3.33. This huge price difference, due to the unique properties of Manuka honey, makes New Zealand the second largest exporter of honey after China. When calculated in US dollars.

New Zealand exports honey to the USA, Australia, China, UK, Japan, Germany. The characteristic feature of these countries is that they are sufficiently developed countries that can afford to consume such expensive honey.

In 2022, the New Zealand imported 72 tonnes of honey. It is only 99th in world imports with a share of 0.01%. Yes, New Zealand imports very little honey. This is probably unnecessary as the country produces and exports some of the most premium honey in the world. It is therefore problematic to sell ordinary honey within New Zealand.

New Zealand’s imports of honey in US dollars also appear to be insignificant. In 2022, the amount totalled 1,228 thousand dollars. This is 68th place in the world export with a share of 0.04%

The average value of imported honey to New Zealand is also quite high. 17.06 per 1kg in 2022. This is explained by the fact that honey is imported from Australia and Niue. And this honey is also a premium honey.

Balance of exports and imports

Australia is a net exporter of honey. With exports of 11 795 tonnes, it  imports only 72 tonnes in 2022.

New Zealand is one of the leaders in honey consumption per person. In 2022, consumption was 1.98 kg per person. This is the sixth position in the world. Let me remind you that the average honey consumption per person in the world is 0.234 kg.
