In 2022, the world produced 1,830,768 tonnes of honey. This is 2.53% less than was produced in the record year of 2017 (1,878,308 tonnes.) But we see honey production increasing as the pandemic begins in 2020.  The average annual growth rate of honey production from 2019 to 2022 is 1.4%.

In 2022, China (461,900 tonnes) with a share of 25% is the world’s leading honey producer. Then comes Turkey (118,297 tonnes) with a 6% share, Iran (79,535 tonnes) with a 4% share, India (74,204 tonnes), Argentina (70,437 tonnes), Russia (67,014 tonnes), Mexico (64,320 tonnes), Ukraine (63079 tonnes), Brazil (60,966 tonnes), USA (56,849 tonnes), Canada (33,745 tonnes), Tanzania (31,345 tonnes), Spain (30,513 tonnes), Korea (29,951 tonnes), Romania (29,760 tonnes).

In 2022, 795,707 tonnes of honey were exported globally. This is the maximum value that has been recorded in the history of observation. With the start of the pandemic in 2020, we see honey exports in terms of tonnes increasing every year. While 626,254 tonnes of honey were exported in 2019, 27% more in 2022. The average annual rate of increase in exports from 2019 to 2022 is 9%.

In 2022, honey exports totalled $2,649,527 thousand dollars. Compared to 2019 before the pandemic, the growth rate was 33 %. The average annual growth rate from 2019 to 2022 was 11 %.

In 2022, China (156,002 tonnes) remains the world’s leading exporter of honey in tonnes, with a 20% share in global exports.  It is followed by India (86,183 tonnes), Argentina (67,380 tonnes), Ukraine (48,372 tonnes), Brazil (36,868 tonnes), Sri Lanka (34,716 tonnes), Belgium (32,021 tonnes), Vietnam (28,090 tonnes), Spain (27,876 tonnes), Mexico (27,443 tonnes), Germany (27,151 tonnes), Turkey (17,249 tonnes), Hungary (15,920 tonnes), Poland (15,036 tonnes), Bulgaria (12,738 tonnes).

In 2022, the world leader in honey exports in dollars remains China (277,671 thousand $). In second place New Zealand (266 731 thousand $), in third place Argentina (229 547 thousand $). Then follows India (229 261 thousand $), Ukraine (137 945 thousand $), Brazil (137 901 thousand $), Germany (137 274 thousand $), Spain (117 525 thousand $), Mexico (109 090 thousand $), Belgium (94 215 thousand $), Hungary (83 354 thousand $), Canada (57 440 thousand $), Vietnam (53 589 thousand $), Poland (52 995 thousand $), Romania (52 384 thousand $).

An interesting fact is that New Zealand is not in the TOP 15 countries in terms of exports in tonnes. But at the same time New Zealand is on the second place after China in honey export in $. This fact is explained by the high value of Manuka honey, which New Zealand exports.

Honey imports in 2022 were 868,787 tonnes. With the pandemic beginning in 2020, honey imports increased by 29.7 per cent.

In 2022, the US remains the world leader in honey imports in tonnes (205,156 tonnes).  Germany is in second place (75,091 tonnes), followed by the UK (51,912 tonnes). This is followed by Japan (47,381 tonnes), Belgium (39,756 tonnes), France (35,506 tonnes), Poland (31,769 tonnes), Spain (31,628 tonnes), Netherlands (17,423 tonnes), Saudi Arabia (16,768 tonnes), Portugal (14,216 tonnes), UAE (11,278 tonnes), Canada (10,566 tonnes), Greece (9,693 tonnes).

But if we combine all European countries into the European Union, the second largest importer of honey would be the European Union.

The first place in honey imports in 2022 in $ is USA (794 278 thousand $), followed by Germany (302 229 thousand $), Japan (168 882 thousand $).  Then follows France (140 321 thousand $), UK (127 565 thousand $), Italy (106 151 thousand $), Belgium (102 498 thousand $), Spain (89 601 thousand $), Poland (71 693 thousand $), China (71 382 thousand $), Netherlands (65 341 thousand $), Saudi Arabia (62 327 thousand $), Canada (56 852 thousand $), Switzerland (45 836 thousand $), Australia (39 298 thousand $).

Conclusions

With the start of Covid 19 we see an increase in honey production worldwide. The largest honey producer is China with a market share of 25%.

Honey exports are also increasing. The average value of exported honey in 2022 is $3.33 per 1kg.

In 2022, China has a share of 20% in global honey exports. At the same time, in monetary terms, China’s market share in exports is 11%. In second place, however, is New Zealand with a market share of 10%. The reason for this is that New Zealand exports much less honey, but it is the most expensive in the world.

In 2022, the world’s honey imports are growing both in volume and monetary terms. The average value of imported honey in 2022 is $3.17 per 1kg

The first place in honey import is occupied by the USA with a share of 24% followed by the EU countries. That is, the most developed countries are the main importers of honey in the world.
